You don’t want to miss this episode!

Jen shares her background as a teacher for 24 years. Nineteen of those were in middle school, which is the level where she currently serves as a Tech Integration Specialist. Her job is to help teachers to use technology to meet the needs of their students.

Listen to this article.

Engage Students AND Meet Standards with Student Podcasting!

Getting Started

A unique aspect of Jen’s school is its elective program for seventh and eighth-graders. Once a week students choose their elective class based on an area of interest. These classes are taught by teachers, parents, grandparents, and community members as organized by the principal. Jen took this program a step further by offering students an opportunity to podcast about their interests that they are learning about throughout this time.

Jen began by letting students explore the content available in podcasts. Next, students started recording their own content using Google Slides. Jen took their podcasting to the next level when she was awarded $10,000 of grant money. They were able to purchase recording equipment, as well as, professional development for helping all teachers to utilize podcasting in their classrooms.

Building the Podcasting Elective Program

With the help of educator friend, Jake Miller, teachers and students were given hands-on learning with the new recording equipment. Chris Nesi, another educator friend, and podcast producer took time to Google Meet with students and provide feedback. To continue with this feedback, Jen and Chris set up a Flipgrid space for students to upload their episodes.

The best way to get started is to just start. Simple voice recording tech makes it a podcast. There is no need to have fancy equipment or to stream on all the name-brand platforms. Teachers interested in using the podcasting concept should be encouraged by the simplicity.

Exposing students to other student-created podcasts helps students to gain the confidence for sharing their own content. Whether 100 or only 1 person listens to the episode it’s still a podcast and students shared their voices. Jen’s students started simple. They each had a Google Slide to upload their voice recording. They also designed logos and added Slide animation to play on clicks. Eventually, Jen created a Google Site to share their Slides. Here is an introductory Hyperdoc lesson that Jen uses with her students to get started.

Podcasting in ALL Content Areas

As students’ competency grew they began writing their own scripts and inviting guests for interviews. They are owning their podcasts and having a whole lot of fun doing it. While Jen’s kids may be creating for an elective this concept for students to show what they know can be used in content classes as well.

Consider how students might use a podcast as an assessment tool. Students can present their learning on any topic without having to write it all out or record with their faces being displayed. Of course, writing out their ideas first is an option and one that can help many students. The opportunity to record their writing can also help students to hear mistakes and make edits. Reading their writing aloud also helps students gain fluency skills. When students have an authentic audience and experience they take more pride in their work.

Jen knew her students had arrived at that next level when students in other grades were talking to her students in the halls as their podcasting persona. Kids are well versed in the video creation world of YouTube and see how the professionals create nicknames or slogans.

Podcasting Equipment

With the grant money, Jen was able to purchase 12 Blue Yeti microphones. They simply plug into a computer or Chromebook with a USB. Students were able to Google directions for how to get them up and running. They also purchased sound boxes to give students specific spaces to record.

For the younger students, Jen started using iPads and microphone headsets to help them to record their voices. Teachers are excited to start their elementary students recording their voices.

In the beginning, students would record for 60-90 seconds. Now students have built up to 12 minutes. Soundtrap for EDU allowed students to add music and talk for longer on their topics of interest. Jen shares how one student interviewed her for 20 minutes about the Harry Potter series. Students were surprising themselves with how long they could talk on their topics.

Jen shares how students are beginning to see how these skills can help them explore career choices. They are recognizing the professionals in the field of podcasting and video production. It’s opening their eyes to the aspects of production that they enjoy and excel in.

Future Projects

Jen hopes to expand the podcasting project into all classrooms. Sharing this project helps to give students a tangible growth mindset work ethic. Teachers at Jen’s school who have implemented podcasting or voice recording are already guiding students when they ask to try again for a better recording.

Jen is also working on an ELA project with our 5th grade and Literacy Enrichment teachers to help students “Show What They Know” about Summarizing, Character Analysis, and Sequencing. We are “App Smashing” with Canva, Google Slides, Flipgrid, Fake Text Message, and Slidesmania.

This school year the teachers of Immaculate Heart of Mary are focusing on aligning standards and assessments. They opened the school year with a PD analyzing the verbs in our standards and aligning assessments to match those verbs. It was REALLY eye-opening for some teachers! The principal, two teachers, and Jen were on a podcast episode for the Diocese of Cleveland talking about the goals for this project. Take a listen!

Up next for Jen is a virtual PD workshop through Kent State University. A semester course, Innovative Teaching, and Learning: Integrating Digital Tools to Engage Your Learners, where educators can work at their own pace on tech tools like movie trailers, Pear Deck, Flipgrid, podcasting, and so many more. The course is open to all educators for $75 and graduate credit through Kent State is also available.

The Power of Podcasts for Learning: Listening, Creating, Sharing, and Growth - SULS0127Podcasts are a powerful tool for learning! In this episode, Kasey talks about all sides of podcasting–what it is, how to listen, how to use them in the classroom, and how to create!

Maybe you’re reading these show notes and have never listened to an episode. Auditory learning isn’t for everyone, which is why this is the perfect episode to start with if you’re new to podcasts.

Podcasts can be published by anyone, anywhere, on countless platforms. On-the-go listening has made podcasts incredibly popular. Apple introduced podcasting in 2005 with the popularity of its iPods. But it wasn’t until Serial, a true-crime podcast debuting in 2011, that skyrocketed the listening audience. Breaking with the typical format, Serial used a storytelling structure in episodes that were released weekly. Much like our favorite television shows.

Listen to this article.

The Power of Podcasts for Learning

Today, there are 2 million active podcasts with 48 million episodes available. When listeners were asked why they listen, 3 out of 4 answered to learn new things. A precedent for learning has been set.

Types of Podcasts

The structure of a podcast has many different forms. Some of those include:

  • The Interview
  • The Solo
  • The Panel
  • Conversational and co-hosted
  • Non-fiction storytelling
  • Fiction storytelling

Each of these structures provides a different purpose to reach a particular audience. Different structures work best with specific contents and purposes for sharing. Some shows, like The Shake Up Learning Show, utilize several structures depending on the content of the episode.

Podcast Categories

There is a podcast for just about everything under the sun, or including the sun. Whatever the content that you teach might be, you’re guaranteed to find a podcast episode to go with it. Some of the most popular categories include:

  • True Crime
  • Comedy
  • Sports
  • Fiction
  • History
  • Business
  • Society and Culture
  • Kids & Family
  • Education
  • News
  • Religion and Spirituality
  • TV & Movies
  • Technology
  • Arts
  • Health and Fitness
  • Music
  • Science
  • Leisure
  • Government

Teachers can use podcast episodes for a number of reasons in the classroom with students. But there are also wonderful podcasts to help teachers gain professional knowledge as well.

Podcast PD

If listening to podcasts is a newer concept for you, read advice from Jen Giffen on how to best listen to podcasts. The advantage of learning from a podcast is that you can listen when doing just about anything. That means your everyday activities can be done while listening and learning.

Here is a list of recommended podcasts for teachers:

School administrators are now accepting podcasts as a way of gaining professional credits. They might be embedded during a face-to-face training session to help enhance the content. Listeners can always answer questions in a Google Form or share during a discussion to demonstrate evidence of learning. For the Shake Up Learning Show, there is a question of the week posed at the end of each episode which can be used as well. Or utilize podcasts over an extended period of time through a PD choice board

Podcasts and Students

If podcasts can teach teachers, then there must be something for students as well. Consider these ideas for using podcasts as content in the classroom:

  • Use podcasts as a station
  • An option on a choice board
  • Enrichment
  • To enhance text and other media (read-alongs)
  • Improve listening skills
  • Improve note-taking skills while listening
  • Use a Google Form to submit evidence and reflection

Here are some great places to start if you’re looking for content, but of course searching for your topic would also work.

Another option for using podcasts in the classroom is to have students create them. Kasey shares how her class produced an episode of Miss Bell’s Chime Time to share their best writing. While in 2005 this project took more time than it would now, Kasey still hears about the positive impact it had on her students from that year.

Other ideas for producing student-created podcasts include:

  • School and community news
  • Storytelling (Retelling/Historical/Fictional)
  • Celebration of success
  • Overcoming failure
  • Interview (experts, family, community, other students)
  • Audiobooks
  • Oral reading of their own writing
  • Book reviews/trailers
  • Reflection
  • Record a presentation
  • Explain answers to a problem
  • Perform/sing

Here are some teachers creating podcasts in their classrooms if you’d like a great example:

There are also a few great resources to help teachers navigate the production of a classroom podcast.

How to Produce a Podcast

The good news is that there isn’t any need for fancy equipment or software. As long as you have access to a computer with recording capabilities then it can be done. A separate microphone can provide higher-quality audio, but it’s not a must-have. There are several free options available to record and edit your podcasts.

There are also a few free, easy-to-use options for publishing as well.

To learn even more about podcasting with your students this episode of The Shake Up Learning Show can help. When you have published with your students be sure to share.

If you’re interested in becoming a Google Certified Educator (level 1, level 2, trainer, innovator, or coach), this is the episode for you!

And if you’re wondering why you should care or be interested, here’s a fun fact: this entire blog wouldn’t exist if I hadn’t become Google Certified.

Neither would my books or podcasts. I wouldn’t be talking to you today if I hadn’t taken those steps!

Let’s dive in! First, I’ll explore what Level 1 certification means and what you can expect from the test. I’ll then talk about some ways to prepare for the exam. I’ll then do the same for Level 2.

From there, I’ll talk about becoming a Google Certified Trainer. I’ll cover the various requirements (one of which I didn’t meet the first time I applied!) as well as the six steps to becoming a Certified Trainer.

I will also talk about Certified Coach, and the Innovator Academy and what it takes to reach the most coveted level of Google Certification!

I’ve helped thousands of people become Google Certified, and I can help you, too! I hope this episode has answered a lot of your questions and explained why the programs are so great, and I look forward to taking the next steps with you.

Podcasting: A Tool for Blended Learning

Guest post by Michele Haiken, Ed.D.

Storytelling is at the heart of our cultures and histories. Before we learn to read and write, we listen. In our classrooms today — whether in person, remote, or hybrid — podcasts are a great text for listening and learning.

Related: Blended Learning with Google Part 2: Storytelling

Podcasting with Students

Podcasting can also be utilized for student creation and creative expression. Producing a podcast requires students to articulate ideas, understanding, and learning. They become problem solvers and enhance their technology skills.

The ISTE Standards for Students call for students to clearly express themselves in a variety of formats and platforms. Creating podcasts requires students to research,  write, and use their verbal skills to communicate a message.

When students create their own podcasts, they are acting as knowledge constructors and empowered learners. Podcasts do not need to be very long and expensive equipment is not necessary. Bringing podcasting into the classroom empowers student self-expression.

Related: How to Podcast with Students

Our job as educators today is not only to teach content area skills and knowledge, but to promote life skills like creativity and critical thinking. Podcasting is an effective medium to share knowledge and experiences.  I am an avid podcast listener and use podcasts as texts to read closely and critically with my middle school students.

My foray into podcasts began with Radiolab, a show on National Public Radio hosted by Jad Abrumrad and Robert Krulwich that combines reporting and documentary on topics from science to philosophy. My ardent listening to this podcast series allowed me to deconstruct the show’s format and use it as a teaching tool in the classroom.

In essence, the podcast is presented as a five-paragraph informative essay about specific scientific inquiries: driverless cars, heroism, gender and sex chromosomes, microbiomes, and Henrietta Lacks. The engaging parts of Radiolab are not only the stories themselves, but the way the hosts present the materials with sound effects, interview excerpts, and a conversational style.

Active Listening with Podcasts

Podcasting: A Tool for Blended LearningBefore students create their own podcasts, we listen to different examples of Podcasts. I provide students with a graphic organizer for students to listen and analyze the structure and style. The more models students have, they are able to decide the best structure for their own podcasts.

Radiolab is one style of podcasting and there are many other types of podcasting from Q & A,  to conversational style (which is more like Radiolab).  This fall I have binged on the Lovecraft Country Radio Podcast that coincides with HBO’s horror show Lovecraft Country providing a close reading and commentary of each episode. Like you, I listen to Kasey’s Shake Up Learning podcasts along with other awesome educator podcasts like Cult of Pedagogy and OnEducation.

You probably have some favorite podcasts yourself whether they be educational based podcasts and theater-style podcasts reminiscent of radio drama – think 1938 Orson Welles Adaptation of War of the Worlds. How you want students to present their podcasts is a decision that you and your students have to make. Maybe offer choices. By offering student choice there will be a diversity of products, students have agency and their voice is at the forefront of the finished product.

Podcasting in Every Content Area

A podcast assignment allows students to be creative communicators who use digital tools to plan and publish content. My students have created podcasts for a mystery writing unit and investigative journalism. Students are not only working on their reading and writing skills in English Language Arts but building strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

Podcasts are for all content areas, even science, and social studies. Creating podcasts requires students to research, write, and even revise their writing to adjust it according to the intended audience once the format and style are selected.  When recording a podcast, students are not just reading aloud their writing but carefully choosing sound effects, recording interviews, and including sound bites from experts adds engaging features that draw the listener’s attention. With podcasts, it is about making the story engaging for listeners.

Podcasting Tools

As for tools, check out Audacity and GarageBand, two podcasting tools students can use for recording their podcasts. Audacity is a free online tool that allows users to record and edit digital files. GarageBand is an app for Macs that enables the user to create sound files and edit sound files. Students can also use screencast platforms to record podcasts like Screencastify. Be sure to check with your school’s technology policy to make sure the app and tools follow your school’s guidelines.

Lastly, a podcast is created to share with others for their listening engagement. Post the file or link on the school webpage, Google Classroom, or out into the world to spread the word and have listeners share feedback.

The post How to Get Google Certified! (Level 1, Level 2, Trainer, and Innovator) – Bonus Episode appeared first on Shake Up Learning.

I chat a lot about Google Certification, but I haven’t taken a deep dive into it yet on the Shake Up Learning Show!

Let’s talk about how to get Google Certified!

Today, I’ll dig into what certifications there are, how to get them (and how hard it is), and what resources can help.

How to Get Google CertifiedIf you’re interested in becoming a Google Certified educator (level 1, level 2, trainer, or innovator), this is the episode for you!

And if you’re wondering why you should care or be interested, here’s a fun fact: this entire podcast wouldn’t exist if I hadn’t become Google Certified.

Neither would my book. I wouldn’t be talking to you today if I hadn’t taken those steps!

Let’s dive in! First, I’ll explore what Level 1 certification means, and what you can expect from the test. I’ll then talk about some ways to prepare for the exam. I’ll then do the same for Level 2.

At that point, you might be wondering about the differences between the training that Google offers compared to my courses. Don’t worry, I’ll explain exactly how they’re different!

From there, I’ll talk about becoming a Google Certified Trainer. I’ll cover the various requirements (one of which I didn’t meet the first time I applied!) as well as the six steps to becoming a Certified Trainer.

I will also talk about the Innovator Academy and what it takes to reach the most coveted level of Google Certification!

I’ve helped thousands of people become Google Certified, and I can help you, too! I hope this episode has answered a lot of your questions and explained why the programs are so great, and I look forward to taking the next steps with you.
