A Brand New Google Trends! (What's trending in Google Search?)

ShakeUpLearning 1.4K views March 22, 2023 10:09 am

Did you know you can open a side panel in Google Chrome? You can use the side panel to display your search results on the right side of the window while viewing pages from your search on the left.

Note: You MUST search Google and open a search result before opening the side panel to see the search option.

This is much easier than going back and forth between tabs when searching. It's also great for student research!

(OH! and the side panel also allows you to save reading lists, view bookmarks, and your Google Search journeys.)

How to Set an Expiration Date on Google Drive Files

ShakeUpLearning 4.6K views November 15, 2022 7:00 am

Shared files are great! But sometimes it can be difficult to find them again.
Google Drive shortcuts allow you to add a link to someone else's file and access it, search for it, and even put it in a folder in your Drive.
This is perfect for living documents that are growing and changing--like the index of Google Quick Tips!

How to Add a Shortcut to a File in Google Drive (and Organize it!)

ShakeUpLearning 9.1K views November 1, 2022 6:00 am

Smart Chips are becoming a part of all of your favorite Google applications. They give you a way to connect all of your "Google stuff" to your documents. This is a great way to improve communication and collaboration and save time! Each "chip" gives you a direct link to a person, file, or event with one-click access.

Who’s ready for a little Halloween fun? Try Halloween Magnetic Poetry with Google Drawings!

Halloween Magnetic Poetry with Google Drawings

I’ve created a Halloween-themed magnetic poetry template with Google Drawings for you and your students.

There are nearly 100 words in this one, so adapt the words that are appropriate for your grade levels. You can use this as an independent activity, or take it a step further and make it a collaborative activity and see how the poetry evolves. You can use the “magnets” included, or even add your own text boxes to extend the activity.

(Note: The words I created are actually images and cannot be edited, but you can delete them. The images give you more of the “magnet” effect. You can add your own by creating a new text box and filling it with a white background, or right-click on the name box and copy it to use.)

To learn how to create your own, enroll in my free mini-course!

How to Insert a Video in Google DrawingsSo…you don’t actually have the option to insert videos from the menu in Google Drawings, but here’s a super easy workaround!

Thank you to Tony Vincent for sharing this trick!

Google Drawings is a very robust tool once you get familiar with it.

But many teachers have been asking if there is a way to insert a video since it’s not in the insert menu.

Try copying and pasting the video from Google Slides.

Create a Header Image with Google DrawingsHow to Create a Google Classroom Custom Banner

Google Classroom is a great application for Google using educators and students to manage assignments, communicate and collaborate, and go paperless!

Google has made great strides in updating this application based on the feedback submitted by educators like you.

Google Classroom is only going to get better!

So if you haven’t taken the time to learn this great application, now is the time.

In this post and video tutorial, I will show you how to create a custom header with Google Drawings, give you a FREE template, and show you how to upload it into Google Classroom!

How to Create a Google Classroom Custom Header with Google Drawings

One feature of Google Classroom is the ability to customize the theme and header (see example below).

You can choose from ready-made themes and header images from Google’s gallery, or you can upload your own image to customize the look and feel of all of your classes.

Adding your own image usually requires more than just finding a picture stored on your drive.

Google Classroom is responsive, which means the size and shape of the header change with the size of your screen on your desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone.

For this reason, you will notice most of Google’s headers have a pattern that works well for this type of responsive application.

Faces and clipart can get distorted in the header, but I have found a way that works for me using Google Drawings to create the header image.

Google Drawings is the unsung hero of the Google Drive suite of applications.

It is a very powerful tool for creation.

See this infographic for more details: 10 Ways to Use Google Drawings in the Classroom.

Google Drawings allows you to create an image in any size that you want, so it was an easy option for creating a custom Google Classroom header.

Below are step-by-step directions to help you create a custom header for your Google Classroom classes.

Things to Know About the Header Image

The header ONLY appears at the top of the stream in Google Classroom.

Since text appears on top of the image, there is a grey filter that will go over your image. Keep this in mind as you design your image.

In my example below, I used a white background and the filter turns it grey.

Create a Google Classroom Custom Header with Google Drawings

The other thing to remember is that Google Classroom is a responsive website that will resize based on the size of the screen. So, what looks good on the desktop, may look very different on mobile.

There are many tools that you can use to create a custom banner for Google Classroom.

My three favorites are Google Drawings, Google Slides, or Canva.com. For the purposes of this post, we are keeping things simple with Google Drawings. But you should definitely check out the super cool templates in Canva for Education.

FREE Blank Template

I recommend you learn how to create an image from scratch, but to save time, I’ve also created blank template. CLICK HERE to make a copy of the header image template.

1. Go to drawings.google.com to open a new drawing.

2. Click on the title (top left) and rename it.

3. Go to File>Page Setup

  • From the drop-down, select Custom
  • Change inches to pixels
  • Input 1000 x 400 pixels and click Okay.
Create a Google Classroom Custom Header with Google Drawings

4. Here comes the fun part! Create your image!

  • Suggestion: right-click on the image and choose a background color to get started. (I chose a white background.)

5. Now you can insert any images or text that you want, like your school logo, a Bitmoji, or other images that help define your class.

6. When you are done creating your image, go to File>Download as> choose .png or .jpeg to download the image to your computer. (Note: Jpeg is good if for real photographs, .png is good for clip art.)

Screen Shot 2016-02-22 at 4.12.37 PM

7. Now, upload your new header into Google Classroom.

  • Go to Google Classroom and choose the class where you wish to update the header.
  • On the Stream, near the bottom-right of the current image header, select “Upload photo.” Navigate to where you downloaded your new header, or drag and drop to upload.
  • Move and crop the image if you like to get it exactly where you want it. Then click, “Select class theme” at the bottom of the window.
  • Voila! You have a new customized header! (Note: the theme colors are not customizable, but Google Classroom tries to somewhat mimic the colors in your image. I’m hoping for the ability to choose custom colors in the future!)
  • Tip: Choosing a different header, even just with minor changes will help you students see at a glance which class they are in and help keep them on track.

What is Dynamic Blended Learning?

“Dynamic blended learning is characterized by constant change and activity, growing and evolving over time. This learning can take place anywhere, anytime, and it is personalized and differentiated. It is learner-centered, giving students choice and embedding communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity skills where they align with the learning goals. Dynamic blended learning also extends beyond the traditional bounds of the school day, schedule, and physical walls, and beyond the physical notion of hard and fast due dates. Digital tools are used for more than substitution, to do and create previously unconceived things. Dynamic learn- ing is boundless, with limitless opportunities.” (page. 4 of Blended Learning with Google.)

Think of Dynamic Learning as Blended Learning on steroids! Dynamic Learning is something I introduced in my first book, Shake Up Learning: Practical Ideas to Move Learning from Static to Dynamic. Blended Learning with Google is a follow-up to the first book with a Google twist.

Below is a whiteboard explainer video to help you better understand the definition:

What is Static Learning?

“Static learning is learning that lacks movement, action, or change. With this unengaging model of education, learning happens in short bursts and is often demonstrated through one-and-done activities, short-term assignments, or worksheets (even digital worksheets), which are confined within the traditional bounds of the school system, school day, and school walls.” (page. 5 of Blended Learning with Google.)

What does this have to do with Google?

Dynamic Learning is NOT about Google! It is about learning! We don’t want to get distracted by shiny, techy tools. The purpose of using technology in any classroom is to support Dynamic Blended Learning. Digital tools like Google for Education present us with a unique opportunity to do things differently, to engage students in new ways, and to inspire them to explore and create.

Does this definition only apply to Google? NO!

You will notice the word Google is not mentioned in the definitions or framework. In fact, the word technology doesn’t even appear. That’s because our focus is always on the end goal–LEARNING!

You can apply this framework using any digital tools that help you meet your learning goals, including Microsoft tools.

What is the Dynamic Learning Framework?

Below is the Dynamic Learning Framework. The Dynamic Learning Model is at the center of the framework, which focuses on five Dynamic Learning Characteristics (5 B’s). These characteristics make it possible to go beyond static, one-and-done activities.

Beyond the Bell

Learning doesn’t have to end when the bell rings. With digital tools and devices that are available 24/7, students can continue to learn, collaborate, grow, and dig deeper into their learning on their own terms. This doesn’t mean homework. This is a mindset for students that means learning can take place anytime, anywhere, and students can own it.

Beyond the Grade Level & Subject Area

Let’s take kids off the conveyor belt of education and give them opportunities to explore the world and move beyond the subject areas we teach. Learning doesn’t have to fit inside a box. Help students discover their interests and passions by going beyond the curriculum.

Beyond the Walls

Bring the world to your students, and bring your students to the world. Every student in every grade level should have opportunities to connect and learn globally, as well as publish their work for a global and intentional audience.

Beyond the Tool(s)

Think beyond using digital tools to do traditional things like typing a paper. Use digital tools to do NEW things! Just going paperless or digital isn’t enough; use tools to go further, go deeper and extend the learning, and consider using tools in alternative ways—beyond their original purpose.

Beyond the Due Date

Consider allowing students to continue the work that interests them beyond the assessment of the final assignment or task. Thinking, learning, and exploring shouldn’t be stifled simply because it was time to turn it in. Let the learning live, grow, and evolve over time.
