A Brand New Google Trends! (What's trending in Google Search?)

ShakeUpLearning 1.4K views March 22, 2023 10:09 am

Did you know you can open a side panel in Google Chrome? You can use the side panel to display your search results on the right side of the window while viewing pages from your search on the left.

Note: You MUST search Google and open a search result before opening the side panel to see the search option.

This is much easier than going back and forth between tabs when searching. It's also great for student research!

(OH! and the side panel also allows you to save reading lists, view bookmarks, and your Google Search journeys.)

Did you know you can share a file and give users an expiration date? This will remove access to the file on the date of your choosing.

How to Set an Expiration Date on Google Drive Files

ShakeUpLearning 4.6K views November 15, 2022 7:00 am

Shared files are great! But sometimes it can be difficult to find them again.
Google Drive shortcuts allow you to add a link to someone else's file and access it, search for it, and even put it in a folder in your Drive.
This is perfect for living documents that are growing and changing--like the index of Google Quick Tips!

How to Add a Shortcut to a File in Google Drive (and Organize it!)

ShakeUpLearning 9.1K views November 1, 2022 6:00 am

Smart Chips are becoming a part of all of your favorite Google applications. They give you a way to connect all of your "Google stuff" to your documents. This is a great way to improve communication and collaboration and save time! Each "chip" gives you a direct link to a person, file, or event with one-click access.

Emoji Assessments for Any Classroom - SULS0168🎉 In this episode, I’m sharing ideas for using emojis in your informal and formative ✅ assessments.

This tool can be used for more than 😀 emotions and SEL!

Use emojis to create a key to check for understanding, reflect, self-assess, peer-assess, or give feedback!

Use emoji assessments in any classroom!

Emoji Assessments for Any Classroom

Let’s take a deep dive into the idea of using emojis in assessments. Stay with me here.

The dictionary defines emoji as “a small digital image or icon used to express an idea, emotion, etc.”

You can use emojis everywhere, and we all do, and our students especially do!

Now, we have been using emojis in quick SEL (social-emotional learning) check-ins, but I’m here to tell you we can do more.

I want to show you how we can use emojis to create a “key” to check for understanding, reflection, self-assessment, peer assessment, or even feedback.

And you can do this in just about ANY classroom!

Using Emojis to Represent a Non-Emotional Response

What if we could use emojis for something other than an emotional response?

What if we could use emojis for informal assessment and really tap into some visual cues for our students?

Emojis can represent just about anything you want them to represent.

When you don’t know what to say in a text message, you can usually find an emoji 🙃.

But the emoji can go far beyond the smiley face. There are tons of symbols and colors that can also represent responses that are not emotions.

👍 ☘ 🌼 ⭐ 🌈 ⚡ 🎯 🚀 💡 🛠  📓 ✏ 🔓  🔴 🟠 🟡 🟢 🔵 🟣

How to Access Emojis on Your Device

Before we dig into the specific examples. Let’s talk about how to access emojis on your devices.

Many do not realize that your laptop, desktop, or Chromebook has a built-in emoji keyboard much like your mobile device.

Emoji Keyboard Commands

Please note that the keyboard isn’t accessible on all websites and mine can be a bit glitchy. But I still use it almost every day.

  • Mac: control+command+space (learn more
  • PC: Windows key + period (learn more)
  • Chromebook: To insert emojis into documents, emails, and chat sessions:
    • Open your Chromebook’s on-screen keyboard.

Emoji Dictionary Websites

There are tons of emoji websites that allow you to easily copy and paste.

My favorite is EmojiCopy.com. (Tip: I keep this bookmarked in my Chrome bookmarks bar for quick access when my emoji keyboard isn’t cooperating.)

Create an Emoji “Key” for Students

The inspiration for this idea is from my own personal learning experience. I was asked to use a color emoji to rate how I was progressing on different goals. We were asked to use the red, yellow, and green circles.

You can easily search your emojis for red and find: ❤ 🔴 🛑 🟥. I’m going to recommend the circle or the square to avoid connecting a non-emotional response to an emotion like the connotation of a heart.

What this creates is a “key” for the emojis.

  • 🔴  I need to work on this.
  • 🟡  I’m making progress but not there yet.
  • 🟢  Goal achieved!

(Please note: Not all emojis work on every device. You may not see the ones I used above (red dot, yellow dot, green dot). Test that the ones you want to use work for you and your students’ devices.)

You can create a key of colors or other symbols that work for you and your students.

This key can be reused throughout the year.

You can even post this key in the room to help students remember, or even create desk cards for students to use.

Some students may struggle to understand if you use smileys instead of symbols or colors. The smiley face, frowns, and tears, can evoke more subjective ideas and emotions.

Feel free to play with this idea. Add more colors and more options.

Create several different types of keys, like goal setting, learning target, reflection, check for understanding, procedures, directions, etc.

Check for Understanding example:

  • ⛈  I don’t understand and need help.
  • ⛅  I kind of understand but need more clarification.
  • ☀  I understand and can show what I know.

Self-Assessments with Emojis

Self-assessments are a great way to use emojis.

Emoji Reactions in Google Docs

In Google Docs you can use emojis in the comments–it’s built-in! It’s called emoji reactions

This would be an easy way for students to respond with an emoji using the key that you have set up (and probably added to the Google Doc).

Emoji Assessments for Any Classroom - SULS0168

Students could leave a comment on the doc with an emoji to self-assess. So if a student left a red dot, the teacher knows they need to intervene or reteach.

I could also see students using this to self-assess at the end of the unit by highlighting their notes and indicating the parts they need to review, and the parts they are confident about.

Emoji in Google Docs Drop-Down Menus

A new Google Doc feature that I am in love with is the drop-down menus.

When you insert a custom drop-down menu, you can insert emojis and your key in the options list. (Bonus: Use the color-coding within the drop-down to emphasize the color. And it’s a great visual!)

Emoji Assessments for Any Classroom - SULS0168

I recommend you use the first option as “Select One” so that it doesn’t default to select the first option.

Below is an example I created with student-friendly “I Can” statements.

Emoji Assessments for Any Classroom - SULS0168

This is a really easy and clean way to use your self-assessment emoji key.

Emoji Options in a Google Sheet Tracker

I’ve shared trackers over the last few years, and ideas from my good friend, Lisa Johnson. Lisa contributed her templates to a guest blog post here, and to my book, Blended Learning with Google.

You can track all kinds of things in a sheet–habits, goals, emotions, reading, learning targets, and more.

You can also create drop-down selections and include emojis!

The example below is an SEL mood tracker, but you can easily create your own trackers to track whatever you want.

Emojis in Formative and Informal Assessments

There are so many other places you could use the emoji key in your formative and informal assessments.

Exit/Entry Tickets

Exit Ticket: “Exit tickets are a formative assessment tool that give teachers a way to assess how well students understand the material they are learning in class.” (edutopia.org)

Entry Ticket: This is a similar idea to the exit ticket but given at the beginning of class, usually to assess what they learned the day before.

Emojis as Answer Choices in a Google Form

Google Forms are so useful for assessment. Below is an exit ticket example with emoji.

Pear Deck

Pear Deck is one of my favorite Google Slides add-ons, and a great formative assessment tool.

They have tons of templates–even a few with some tradition smiley face emoji. But these can be revised to fit your own emoji key!

3-2-1

3-2-1 is a great formative assessment strategy. You can customize this exactly how you want it!

  • 3 Things I Learned Today
  • 2 Things I Found Interesting
  • 1 Question I Have

Add Emoji Ratings to the 3-2-1 to show confidence in responses to the 3 things I learned today.

  • 👍🏻 I got this and I’m ready to move on.
  • 🤦🏽‍♂️ I’m a little bit confused.
  • 🆘 I need help!

Reflection on Learning

Reflection is a critical part of the learning process. Add the option to select an emoji rating to give a visual for the students and a quick way for teachers to check for understanding.

Feedback

Emoji can be used as feedback–teacher to student feedback, student to student feedback, or even student to teacher feedback.

Consider using an emoji key for feedback that is used over and over again.

This can range from simple stickers for encouragement. 🎉 = Great Job!

To using an elaborate key for writing feedback:

  • ✂ = common splice
  • ⚠ = check spelling
  • 👀 = word choice

I’ve only scratched the surface of this idea! How can you use this in your classroom? Leave me a comment below!

In this episode, Kasey shares her favorite tips and tools to improve parent-teacher communication. Technology can help improve communication and save valuable time. Let’s explore practical tips, digital tools, and strategies to communicate effectively with parents.

Communication with parents can often make or break a student’s school year. Keeping parents informed is always a top priority for educators and usually, it requires several modes of communication. We want to be transparent and timely in sharing information with our parents. These tips and tools will not only help support students and parents but also provide a record for teachers.

Listen to this article.

Tips and Tools to Improve Parent-Teacher Communication

Virtual Tech Support and Tutorials

There are a few ways that virtual tech support and tutorials can help parents. Of course, in these pandemic times of virtual learning, we are all now accustomed to this situation and the need for support in this area. However, a tutorial might also be helpful for parents who may not be as familiar with the technology. They may need help navigating a classroom website or the online grade book.

Screencastify is a simple Chrome extension that will save all recordings onto your Google Drive automatically. It’s free and allows you to edit, add text, and much more.

Loom is very similar to Screecastify, and also offers free and paid versions. Loom adds a more personal touch by including your face video in the corner while you share the tutorial.

Iorad is another screen recording tool that allows you to record an interactive tutorial. For example, if you want to walk parents through a website with a number of clicks, Iorad allows them to click through that process.

Consider how these tutorials need to be stored and then accessed by parents. A district or building a YouTube channel may be the best option. Sharing a playlist link or individual video link is super simple.
Google Drive links can also be embedded on websites or in emails.

Social Media Communication

Important dates and reminders can often be an expectation for parents to see within their social media feed. It’s likely parents visit those communication tools daily and will see those important announcements and reminders.

Parents and students enjoy seeing pictures from special events and celebrations that happen during the school day. However, it’s important to consider how student images are being shared. Episode 153 of the Shake Up Learning show provides ten reasons to stop and think before sharing images of children on social media.

The most common social media platforms that teachers and schools are using to share information with parents include Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and occasionally TikTok.

For those utilizing social media to communicate it’s worth sharing that Canva offers a number of templates. Using templates can help save time and allow for a cohesive, branded look that will help parents see it as official information.

Tips and Tools to Improve Parent-Teacher Communication

Direct Parent Communication

In the instances where schools have participated in remote learning, teachers were away from classroom telephones. As a solution, many turned to a Google Voice phone number for talking directly with parents. This is a phone number that is connected to your Google account and offers voice calls, text messaging, as well as, voicemail.

Email is by far the most popular form of communication. One of the best ways to leverage this communication tool is through the email signature. There, teachers can add links to other communication tools.

Text messaging through a personal phone number may not be something teachers want to provide to parents. Remind is a great tool that allows teachers to send messages without being linked to their personal phone numbers. The options to send links, images, or voice clips are all available. This also keeps a record of the communication that took place between the teacher and parent. Messages can also be sent to a group or individuals.

LMS Progress Reports and Communication

Many of the most popular platforms allow for teachers to automate communication about grades and assignments. Google Classroom allows guardians to input their email addresses and set up notices for assignments. Schoology, Canvas, and Seesaw also provide ways for parents to see student progress and assignments.

Class Dojo is a tool used mostly in the elementary grades as a behavioral management tool. Teachers have the ability to send personalized messages along with the behavior updates automatically shared with parents.

Surveys and Feedback

At the start of every school year, it’s a good idea to connect with parents and ask them about their preferred method of communication. Comparing your preferred tools to parent-preferred tools can help you navigate which tutorials might be necessary to start.

Tips and Tools to Improve Parent-Teacher Communication

Two tools that can help generate feedback are Google Forms and Jotform. Google Forms is a great way to help you see what’s most popular and collect information that can be saved in a spreadsheet. JotForms are great for taking a PDF information sheet and making it digital. Once parents answer all the questions the form can be printed in its original form and added to a binder.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and General Updates

Another innovative option that surfaced during the pandemic is the option to have virtual conferences. Whether these meetings are a typical update or a necessary meeting to comply with the special needs of a student, Google Meet, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams are popular tools.

Google calendar now allows for a booking page! This can be used to create appointment time slots where parents can choose their time and day based on your provided options.

When choosing a video conferencing tool consider the needs of the parents. Google Meet can provide captions, as well as, translated captions. Google Docs also provides a translation feature. Perhaps it is necessary to keep a document of notes during the conference, a Google Doc can allow for collaboration and a record of the meeting.

Flipgrid is often referenced for students, but it could be used for personal video messages being shared with parents. Rather than mailing a positive postcard, Flipgrid could be the place to share something positive that a student did that day.

Class Resources, Newsletters, and Happenings

Throughout the school year, it may be necessary to share classroom resources with parents. Perhaps students are using an online textbook, web-based reading materials, or specific web-based learning tools, these can all be collected inside of Wakelet. While these may be used by students, it helps when parents understand and know how to help their students access them.

Tips and Tools to Improve Parent-Teacher Communication

credit: Wakelet.com

Another way that Wakelet can help is to collect resources specifically for parents. Any video tutorials, links to class websites, or even a virtual newsletter can help keep everything in one place to easily locate.

When mapping out how you will communicate with parents it’s important to consider the time it takes to complete a single communication tool. Designing and writing a newsletter could be incredibly time-consuming. However, utilizing a template from Canva could help speed up the process. In episodes 132 and 133, Kasey shares more than 30 ways to use the templates that Canva provides for educators

Class Blogs are another great way to share information with parents. Providing parents with a singular place that shares all the information, even in the palm of their hand, can be a major time saver for teachers.

Some of the most common options for creating this type of website include Edublogs, WordPress, Weebly, or Google Sites. While Google Sites is not officially a blog, it is a simple way to create a classroom website with embedded documents, images, and links.

No matter how you choose to communicate with parents it’s always a great idea to begin with some collaboration. Check with administrators to learn if there are preferred tools. Talk with colleagues and team members to help generate consistency and time-saving habits. It may be possible to share the work in creating general communications. Even students can help!

1. Storytelling with Google Tools

The concept of storytelling is not just for the Reading and Writing teachers. Telling a story can look like a lot of different things. For example, retelling events in your own words, changing perspectives, inventing new stories, sharing steps in a process, and so many more. Take a listen to episode 89 of the Shake Up Learning Podcast for many more ideas on storytelling.

Ebooks are a great way to have students create any of those storytelling ideas. Mike Mohammad shared how he used Google Slides for his physics students to explain concepts to younger kids.

Stop motion animation in Google Slides can be a little more complicated, but also a really fun way for students to show through images.

Comic strips and interactive timelines are two forms of storytelling that can easily be created with Slides or even in Drawings. Both of these help to bring life to sharing the order of events.

Another fun way to tell stories through geography is with Google Earth. It allows you to create a tour with the addition of comments, notes, and images.

2. Collaborative Notes

Note-taking is a difficult concept for students to grasp. Often times they either write down everything or only what gets written on the board. Pulling out the most important information doesn’t always happen when students take notes. Allowing them to be in a collaborative setting can guarantee that they will get the most important information. In this blog post, Kasey walks you through the steps of training students to take collaborative notes through Docs.

Collaborative notes are also a great way to keep track of important information from staff meetings or any professional development.

3. Authentic Audience

There are many ways for students to share work with an authentic audience. Consider the power of an audience for students. Quality of work generally levels up when students know someone other than their teachers are going to see it. Students of today are accustomed to sharing with an audience so why should their learning be any different?

Teaching them safe ways for sharing over the internet is a lesson in and of itself. These lessons for responsible sharing are likely to influence their personal sharing as well. Having an authentic audience doesn’t always mean sharing with the world. Start small with another classroom and grow into a wider audience.

4. SEL Check-in with Google Forms

Social-Emotional Learning had begun to surface in the classroom before the pandemic hit, however, in light of the pandemic it has become much more important. Using a Google Form, to check in with students can be a foundational relationship builder. The Form allows students to share privately, even if it’s as simple as an emoji to share how they are feeling.

5. Podcasting with Students

The way that people connect with hearing another person’s voice is incredibly powerful. Podcasting provides a way for students to share their learning, but to also gain learning. Jen Conti recently shared how podcasting can help educators to meet standards while giving students a creative product. To learn all about how to engage students through podcasting take a listen to episode 130. Utilizing podcasts for blended learning can really help students express themselves creatively.

6. Use Canva Templates

Discover a mountain of templates that can be created and personalized in a free online tool. Start with this two-part series, episodes 132 and 133,  for ideas and the possibilities that Canva provides to teachers and students. From adding beautiful graphics as a Google Classroom header to creating a professional-looking website, Canva provides you with the template you’re looking for.

7. Fake It ‘til You Make It

Social media has the attention of our students. Mimicking this medium for storytelling engages our students in a platform that is familiar to them. In episode 32 Kasey talked with Lisa Johnson about a fake Instagram template she created in Keynote. That episode inspired Carly Black to create a similar template using Google Slides that she used in her own Language Arts classroom.

Lisa also shared a creative way to fake blog with students using a template she created. Her template shares some interesting ways for students to express creativity and incorporate many aspects of their learning.

8. Podcast PD

Learning through podcasts continues to grow as a preferred method for many people. If there is something you’d like to learn about chances are you could find a podcast that could teach you. Each of the Shake Up Learning podcast episodes is uploaded into a course on the Teachable platform in the All-Access Pass class. Within this course, a certificate can be printed for listening and learning then presented to an administrator for credit of professional development.
The Shake Up Learning podcast continues to be free and expects to break 1 million downloads early in 2022. If you are interested in learning more about the all-access pass take a look at the online school for a list of courses and Master Classes.

9. Google Certification

Back in episode 138, Kasey shared what she learned from taking the new Google Certification exams. Turns out the questions have all been changed to multiple-choice or drag and drop, making the test much easier.

Google Certification can be a major game-changer for educators. So much can be learned through the process of becoming certified, but also the connections and confidence gained are extremely helpful. To learn more about the entire process check out the free webinar and specific courses for walking you through each exam and even working towards a Google Certified Trainer.

10. Read Blended Learning with Google

Join our next online book study in March! Perhaps you haven’t had time to read the book just yet or you’re ready to read it again. An online book study is a great way to engage with other educators and learn so many great ideas to help transform your classroom. Learn more about the book study here. Listen to this article.

Time-Saving Tips and Tools for Teachers (Part 2)

Chrome Tab Groups

Chrome has a special feature that allows you to create groups of tabs. You can even color-code them! This can be especially helpful when working with several websites or documents at once. To group the tabs, right-click on a tab and select Add Tab to New Group.

For example, most teachers have a group of websites that are open daily. We need to take attendance, check email, share lessons, post to Google Classroom. All of these tabs could be grouped, labeled “daily,” and color-coded so with one click each morning you’re ready to go.

Link to Google Classroom Assignment

One of the most viewed YouTube videos on the Shake Up Learning channel shares how to directly link Google Classroom assignments. Fellow teacher, Tammi Brunner, shares how she uses these direct links in a Google Slides planner. Tammi has her students use a weekly planner of slides that contain each day’s agenda and all the links students need. This is great for keeping kids on track for each day.

To find the link, go into Google Classroom where the assignment has been posted in Classwork. The three dots in the right corner will give the option to copy the link. These links can be shared in email, linked in a document or slide, in the comment section of digital grade books, or any other place you have established for students to find information.

Mote for Feedback

Mote is a free Chrome extension that allows you to leave audio messages. Talking is much faster than typing. Using the Mote extension allows you to talk through a personal message to students about their work. The extension works in all the Google places, Docs, Slides, and Sheets. To learn more about how Mote can help check out podcast episode 107.

Use Your Phone as a Scanner

There are several ways to use mobile phones for scanning. While taking a picture could do the trick, scanning will provide a more organized system for where that image is stored. Several apps, like Evernote Scannable or Notes on iPhone, will provide the option to scan any document and make it digital. This tip is a great way to quickly provide information in a digital format.

Package Assignments

If packaging assignments is a new concept go listen to episode 68 where Kasey discusses this in-depth. The basic idea is to include all the parts and pieces students need to complete the end product. Providing students with all the important information up front, in one place frees teachers up to spend time engaging rather than answering simple questions over and over again. If students or parents are in need of due dates, timelines, or requirements they will have one place to look for the answer.

Fellow teacher, Stephanie Richardson, shares how she often packages her assignments using a daily Google Slide, hyperdocs, or Wakelet. Here are 10 tips for how to package your assignments.

How to Package Digital Assignments

Recording Video Lessons

Providing video lessons for students is part of asynchronous learning. This is the opportunity for students to learn within a specific period of time, but having materials to visit over and over when they are needed. For some of Kasey’s best tips on providing asynchronous learning listen to episode 97

Breaking down longer or more complex concepts into bite-sized chunks provided in a video format is a way of duplicating yourself. Videos can also be a great way to share feedback or reteach when necessary. Simple morning videos or social-emotional check-ins or a way to provide choice for our students are more ways that videos can help.

Add a Folder to the Bookmarks Bar in Google Chrome

Bookmarking essential websites can be a great time saver. In a similar fashion to grouping tabs, saving commonly visited websites saves lots of time. Teaching students how to do this as well can save time when working digitally in the classroom.

One way to save space and organize even more links in the Bookmarks Bar is to create folders!

Auto-Grading Forms

There are several digital assessments that provide an auto-graded option. Some of the web-based options include Quizizz, Quizlet, Kahoot!, Formative, GimKit, and many more. Did you know Google Forms can also be auto-graded? In settings, choose to make the Form a quiz. This will allow you to choose a correct answer or to manually grade written responses.

Priority Workspaces in Google Drive

Vicki Heupel is the guru for utilizing collaboration in the classroom. You can hear how she developed a collaborative system with her students in episode 26 and then hear a follow-up to that coaching interview in episode 120. Vicki chimed in on the time-saving conversation to share how she uses priority workspaces in Google Drive.

If you’re not familiar with Workspaces, it can be found under Priority in the Google Drive menu. Using the Priority Drive is similar to grouping tabs. Workspaces are folders you create with your most-used files without removing them from their current location. Creating a workspace when starting a new project can be a great way to keep all of the files organized in one place, especially if they reside in a different organization on Drive.

Use the Comment Bank in Google Classroom Grading

Every teacher appreciates advice for speeding up their grading workflow. When using Google Classroom for assignments one way to speed up providing feedback is to use a comment bank. When grading within Classroom it’s now possible to grade document after document in one place with a simple click. In the right sidebar menu, you’ll find the comment bank. We all know there are popular mistakes and rather than typing the same feedback each time, adding it to the comment bank allows you to speed up the process. You’re still able to add personalized feedback or a video link as well.

In this episode, Kasey takes a deep dive into the uses of Google Forms.

There are so many ways to use Google Forms beyond a standard survey or quiz.

Learn how you can use Google Forms to engage students in new ways, use powerful add-ons, and save valuable time!

And don’t miss out on the handy infographic with 30 Ways to Use Google Forms in the Classroom!

Listen to this article.

30 Ways to Use Google Forms in the Classroom

30 Ways to Use Google Forms in the Classroom

1. Bell Ringer

Google Forms is a great way to give students warm-ups or “bell-ringers” to see what they remember from the previous lesson.

2. Exit Ticket

Similarly, use Google Forms as an exit ticket to see what they learned during class that day. (Students must complete before they are allowed to leave. It’s their ticket out the door.)

3. Student Interest Survey

There are lots of ways to get to know your students, but Google Forms is a great way to gather some basic information and keep it organized in a spreadsheet.

Back to School with G Suite

4. Parent/Guardian Survey

You can also use Forms to survey parents and guardians to learn about home life, internet access, and your students.

5. Permission Slips

Go paperless with permission slips and use a Form!

6. Review Content

I love to use Google Forms to help students review content. Try using the “Go to Section Based on Answer” feature to help students review questions that they answered incorrectly.

30 Ways to Use Google Forms in the Classroom

This is called branching, and it can get complicated, but very powerful.

Branching

Here’s a simple review example.

Learn how this works in this post.

7. Choose Your Own Adventure

This strategy also makes use of the “Go to Section Based on Answer” feature in Google Forms, but allows students to make decisions in a story–similar to a Choose Your Own Adventure book.

Here’s an example of a Choose Your Own Adventure Google Form from Sylvia Duckworth.

8. Add Audio with Mote

Mote is a Chrome extension that allows you to use audio in your favorite Google Apps. With Mote, you can leave an audio question and students can respond with audio as well.

9. Collect Feedback and Comments on a Google Site

Google Sites is a great tool, but it’s missing one important feature–comments! A workaround is to embed a Google Form on the bottom of your page to gather feedback.

10. Contact/Parent Information Forms

So much paper goes home to parents! Try a Google Form for collecting basic contact and parent information.

11. Sign Up for Meeting/Conference Time-Slots

With add-ons like Choice Eliminator 2 or Choice Removal, you can use Google Forms to have students, parents, or anyone sign up for a time-slot!

30 Ways to Use Google Forms in the Classroom

Install and set up the add-on, then you can add your options and have each option eliminated after it’s selected so no one signs up for the same slot.

12. Generate Documents, Certificates, Lesson Plans, etc.

Did you know you can use add-ons like Autocrat or Form Publisher to create customized documents from the data entered in a form? Create docs, certificates, lesson plans, or anything else you need!

13. Take Notes

Yes, you can create a form with a paragraph response and use it to take quick notes and save them in ONE location!

14. Research Notecards

Remember taking index cards to the library? Try using Google Forms for students to enter their research information–book titles, page numbers, quotes, etc. Then it will be organized in Google Sheet.

30 Ways to Use Google Forms in the Classroom

15. SEL Check-Ins

Social-Emotional Learning is more important than ever! Use Forms to check-in with your students emotional well-being.

16. General Quizzes & Assessments (pre and post)

Of course, Google Forms is a great tool for regular quizzes and classroom assessments. Don’t forget you can use Forms for pre-assessment as well as post.

17. Checks for Understanding

Sometimes it can be challenging to know if your students have understood the content. Try using Forms for a simple check for understand to make sure they are ready to move on.

18. Collect Data/Polls/Research

As a survey tool, Google Forms is a great way for students and teachers to collect data, poll students or community members, and collect research.

19. Scavenger Hunt

Google Forms can be used for games like a Scavenger Hunt where the next clue is revealed after evidence has been submitted. Customize the confirmation message to communicate the next steps.

Go to the settings in your form, select the “Presentation” tab, then customize the message for your game.

30 Ways to Use Google Forms in the Classroom

20. Complete Rubrics

Consider creating a Google Form for yourself with the information from your rubric and fill out the form for each item you assess. Then your selections will feed into a Google Sheet so you can easily see the results for your class in one location.

21. Reading Response and Log

As a reading teacher, I know how important it is to get students to track their reading and write thoughtful responses. Use Forms to have students submit their reading logs and responses each week.

22. Parent/Volunteer Sign-Up

Need help? Use Forms for parents to sign up to volunteer for special events, classroom support, etc.

23. Parent/Guardian Communication Log

As teachers, we have to keep a log of the communication we have with each parent. Use Google Forms to quickly add the parent information and a summary of the communication so you know you have it recorded.

24. Reflection

Reflection is an essential part of the learning process. There are many ways to have students reflect, but it can be quick and handy to submit reflections with a Google Form.

25. Discussion Starters

Sometimes it can be difficult to get students to discuss the topic at hand. Try using a Form to stimulate conversation ideas, so students are ready to share.

26. Progressively Harder Questions

This strategy also uses the “Go To Section Based on Answer” feature mentioned in #6 and #7 above.

As students answer questions correctly, they can be taken to questions that get progressively more difficult instead of every student just answering the same exact questions.

27. Self-Assessments

Use Forms to have students self-assess their own work. This is particularly helpful in group projects.

28. Student-Created Quizzes

Teachers aren’t the only ones who should be creating with Forms. Students can use it to create forms and quizzes, too.

Have students create their own test or quiz! (They usually create something harder than the teacher!)

29. Escape Rooms/Breakouts

Escape rooms can require a lot of supplies, locks, etc. But you can create a digital version where students have to solve the form in order to get the next clue!

30. Amazing Race

And yet another great game idea is to use Google Forms for the Amazing Race. (I actually participated in one of these at the Google Innovator Academy and it was super fun!)

Here are detailed directions from Steph Pearson on how to set this up!

BONUS: Use Doc Appender for Student Observations!

Thank you to Jen Giffen for sharing this idea!

Document those conversations you have with students on the fly. Jen uses Doc Appender to feed all the information into a Google Doc so it’s not so hard to read it on a Sheet. These Docs can also be shared with administrators and parents!

What would you add to this list? Please leave a comment!
