Take time to explore this post if you want more direction and organizational ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick overview of the most common ways to organize:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Organize by modules or unit of study<\/li>\n<li>Organize by week<\/li>\n<li>Organize by type of assignment (daily work, quizzes, tests, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Organize by subject areas (best for elementary)<\/li>\n<li>Add a TODAY topic to the top<\/li>\n<li>Organize by learning target<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, organization became even more important during remote learning. Check out these additional tips and strategies: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/blog\/10-google-classroom-tips-for-remote-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10 Google Classroom Tips for Remote Learning<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/43yu98l00k4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Add Emojis to Your Topics and Assignments<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Find the strategy that works best for you and your students.<\/p>\n<h2>Customize Your Stream Settings<\/h2>\n<p>Inside your class, go to the settings icon near the top-right to adjust the settings for your class.<\/p>\n<h3>Adjust Student Permissions<\/h3>\n<p>The default for Google Classroom allows students to post in the Stream, and comment on posts. During remote learning, you may find this feature helpful, or it may be causing issues. You decide what\u2019s best for your students.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Posts are ideas, questions, or information that students share. Students can add files such as images, links, or YouTube videos to their posts.<\/li>\n<li>Comments are text-only responses to posts.<\/li>\n<li>Students can\u2019t edit their posts or comments, but they can delete them. Teachers can delete any post or comment, and see deleted posts and comments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12305 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-04-03_16-57-34.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-04-03_16-57-34.png 727w, https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/2020-04-03_16-57-34-300x148.png 300w\" alt=\"10 Google Classroom Tips for Remote Learning\" width=\"500\" height=\"246\" \/>In the Class settings, under General, next to Stream, click \u201cStudents can post and comment\u201d and then choose a permission:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students can post and comment:<br \/>\nThis option is the default. Students<br \/>\ncan post to the Stream page and<br \/>\ncomment on any item.<\/li>\n<li>Students can only comment:<br \/>\nStudents can comment on an<br \/>\nexisting post, but can\u2019t create a post.<\/li>\n<li>Only teachers can post or comment:<br \/>\nStudents can\u2019t post or comment on the Stream page. This option mutes all students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TIP<\/strong>: When discussing the use of student posts and comments, use this as a teachable moment to discuss online etiquette and digital citizenship skills.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZLZrwG_mDTQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>(See also page 9 in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/blog\/the-google-classroom-cheat-sheets-for-teachers-and-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Google Classroom Cheat Sheet for Teachers<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<h3>Classwork on the Stream Setting<\/h3>\n<p>Many teachers are annoyed with the Stream, where you can post announcements and see notifications of new items that have been added to the Classwork page.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers can customize what appears on this page for each class. Inside your class, go the settings icon near the top-right and scroll down to the \u201cGeneral\u201d Sections.<\/p>\n<p>The Stream is your Google Classroom communication hub. This is where you post announcements and keep students informed.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10766 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/2019-09-08_10-16-00.png\" alt=\"10 Google Classroom Tips You Didn't Know\" width=\"498\" height=\"261\" data-pin-description=\"10 Google Classroom Tips You Didn't Know\" data-pin-title=\"10 Google Classroom Tips You Didn't Know\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/2019-09-08_10-16-00.png 721w, https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/2019-09-08_10-16-00-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/>By default, the Stream will also show notifications of new items posted on the classwork page. For some, this feels like a duplication and can muddy up the stream. (Ha! See what I did there.)<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re using the Classwork page, you can choose a collapsed or expanded view for Classwork notifications on the Stream page. Click the drop-down arrow next to the name of your class.<\/p>\n<p>2. Create your assignment.<\/p>\n<p>2. In the bottom right, click the drop-down arrow and choose, \u201cschedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3. Select the date and time you want the assignment to post.<\/p>\n<p>4. Click, \u201cschedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i.gyazo.com\/ae3df27e9a031e0da8fe0221a126bbfc.gif\" alt=\"How to Schedule an Assignment in Google Classroom\" width=\"601\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\">\n<ul>\n<li>Posts can only be scheduled for one class at a time. So if you want to schedule for multiple classes, these steps will have to be followed for each class. You can, however, save as a draft for multiple classes at once by selecting the checkboxes for each class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Make Copies of Assignment Attachments<\/h2>\n<p>You can add attachments, links to outside resources and websites, YouTube videos, or Google Drive files to your assignment. When the file attachment is a Google Docs, Sheet, or Slide, you gain additional options for distribution and how students interact with the file.<\/p>\n<p>After you select the Doc, Sheet, or Slide file, you will see a new drop-down menu option.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-15-at-4.42.16-PM.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5489\" src=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-15-at-4.42.16-PM.png\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-15-at-4.42.16-PM.png 727w, https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-15-at-4.42.16-PM-300x64.png 300w\" alt=\"Google Drive file options in Assignments\" width=\"727\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Students can view file<\/strong>\u2014All students can read the file, but not edit it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students can edit file<\/strong>\u2014All students share the same file and can make changes to it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make a copy for each student<\/strong>\u2014(For Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides only) Students receive an individual copy of the file that they can edit. The student\u2019s name is automatically added to the document title. When a student turns in the assignment, the teacher sees the file labeled with the student\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notes:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The above options are for Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides only.<\/li>\n<li>Once you click assign, you cannot edit these options. If you choose the wrong option, or simply change your mind, you will have to delete the assignment and start over.<\/li>\n<li>If you attach a Google Forms quiz, grades can be imported directly to the\u00a0<strong>Student Work<\/strong>\u00a0page if there is no other attachment on the assignment.<\/li>\n<li>Grade importing can\u2019t be enabled if there is another attachment on the assignment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Invite Students<\/h2>\n<p>There are three ways for teachers to add students to your class.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Send an invite link<\/strong>\u2014Students click the link to join.<\/p>\n<p>Each class you create has an\u00a0invite link. Students can accept the invite in the email or in Classroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: To invite a group of students, you can use the email alias for the Google Group. You don&#8217;t have to be a member or owner of the group, but you must be able to view group members and email addresses.
