But I wanted to share it with you to help more teachers learn how to create their own custom choice boards.<\/p>\n<p>Choice boards can be intimidating to create from scratch, but they can be so powerful for the classroom.<\/p>\n<p>I also created this handy infographic with the six steps. (Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/blog\/synchronous-online-learning-vs-asynchronous-online-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asynchronous learning here<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>Every student doesn\u2019t have to do the exact same thing at the exact same time!<\/li>\n<li>Choice boards offer a flexible learning path and help us differentiate.<\/li>\n<li>Use in ANY grade level or subject area!<\/li>\n<li>And, they give students voice and choice in their learning!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c\u2026at its core, differentiated instruction means addressing ways in which students vary as learners.\u201d\u2013 Carol Ann Tomlinson<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/blog\/the-teachers-guide-to-digital-choice-boards-suls008\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Teacher&#8217;s Guide to Choice Boards<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/shake-up-learning.ck.page\/00fe3a57f7\/index.js\" async=\"\" data-uid=\"00fe3a57f7\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 1: Purpose &amp; Delivery<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>When you are designing a choice board, you should ask yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the purpose of your choice board?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build background knowledge\/access prior knowledge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check for understanding\/formative assessment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summative assessment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enrichment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where will this be completed?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In class<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At stations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In class and homework<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Homework<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will these activities be completed independently or collaboratively?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How much time should this take?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-class time?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outside of class time?<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">20\/30\/45\/60 minutes<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">1 Day<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">1 Week<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">6 or 9 Weeks<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\">\u00a0Semester-long<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 2: Determine Assessment Evidence<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Begin with the end in mind!<\/p>\n<p>Back in episode 10, I did some <a href=\"https:\/\/shakeuplearning.com\/blog\/how-to-choose-a-digital-assessment-strategy-suls010\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on-air coaching with Carly Black<\/a>. Through the coaching process, Carly determined that the choice board she used with her students didn&#8217;t assess what she needed to assess.<\/p>\n<p>You always want to ensure that you know the purpose of your choice board and how students can demonstrate mastery.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start with your standards and learning outcomes\u2013what do students need to learn and be able to do?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you know when they get it?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What activities will demonstrate mastery?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommended: Use a rubric aligned with the learning outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rubrics can aid with grading, but the purpose is for the student to understand how they will be assessed, not for the teacher to simplify grading (that\u2019s a bonus!)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Try writing this out in a table:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h5><b>Learning Outcome<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h5><b>How will you know when they get it?<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h5><b>What activities demonstrate mastery?<\/b><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determine the theme or central idea<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Correctly identify the story&#8217;s theme and can communicate this idea.<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a graphical representation of the theme using Canva.<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Construct a summary free of personal opinion<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summarize the appropriate text in a concise manner that conveys important events from the story.<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/td>\n<td>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Write a one-paragraph summary.\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Create a conversational comic strip.<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\">\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doodle and draw a summary representation.<\/span><\/h5>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Select Activities<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>After you have brainstormed activities that align with your learning outcomes, select the best ones for your choice board.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each activity should align with one or more of the learning outcomes. You can have several activities aligned with one outcome or separate activities for different outcomes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will these be digital activities, hands-on, paper-based, or a combination?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determine how many activities you want students to complete. Usually, there is one thing you want ALL students to do&#8211;read this article, watch this video, etc.<\/p>\n<p>This can also come in handy for beginners who don&#8217;t want to overwhelm with too many choices.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can add must-do activities to a choice board so that they must be completed alongside other choices. This could also include a teacher-led lesson, a mini-lesson with a small group, a station, or collaboration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternatively, you can choose to offer free choice where students propose their own activity. (advanced, not for beginners)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I always use the middle square in my Tic-Tac-Toe Choice Board as the must-do activity. The possibilities are limitless. However, there are some standard styles that can you can use when creating your custom choice board.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you know how many activities you want in your board, select the style that fits best (or create a new one)!<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick 2\/Pick 3\/Pick 4 etc.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>This one can take many forms, a list, a table grid, or anything that shows students all their options. Remember, choice boards can be a list written on the board. And I have shared several different templates for this one over the years. It&#8217;s easy. Many, if not all, of the options, will use technology. You can also <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include ways for students to select their choices digitally on the board, leave comments, and link back to their products and evidence of learning.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tools to Create<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The tools available to create choice boards are pretty much endless.
